Nicole Whaley is the Founder and President of the Florence Whaley Foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from San Diego State University and a Master of Social Work degree from California State University, Los Angeles. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Nicole has dedicated 19 years to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, serving children and their families. In addition to her public service, Nicole has taught as an adjunct professor at various universities for over 10 years. Nicole is the owner and CEO of Proverbs Counseling Services, a mental health agency offering therapy across California, Tennessee and Missouri. Nicole is also the owner and CEO of the Potter’s House, a residential facility for adults with developmental disabilities.
With over 20 years of experience in social services, Nicole has committed her life’s work to advocacy, social justice, empowerment, equal rights and education focused on serving families and communities through her philanthropy and outreach efforts.
Joseph Arsanious, AMFT is a mental health clinician at the Florence Whaley Foundation. He has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the University of California Riverside and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Riverside, in Theological Studies from St. Athanasius and St. Cyril Theological School and in Counseling from California State University, East Bay. Joseph has been a dedicated Orthodox Christian priest since 2018, serving and supporting over 200 families in the East Bay. He is passionate about counseling, especially with adults and couples, and believes in the profound impact that a strong family unit can have on leading a richer and more fulfilling life. As a family man himself, with a loving wife and three children, Joseph deeply understands the importance of nurturing relationships and fostering personal growth. His approach to therapy goes beyond just solving immediate challenges as he focuses on uncovering the underlying causes and guiding individuals through self-discovery and growth.
Before ministry, Joseph worked as a Software Engineer in the Bay Area, contributing to the development of various medical devices. This unique blend of technical expertise, spiritual guidance, and understanding of underlying human psychology allows him to connect with clients on multiple levels, offering a holistic approach to their well-being.
Dr. Valinda Bowens, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, is a certified court-ordered Anger Management, Shoplifting and Theft Addiction, and Parenting Instructor at Florence Whaley Foundation. Dr. Bowens is the founder and CEO of Shift Psychological Services where she specializes in a variety of areas, including anxiety, depression, relationship building, life transitions, and more. Dr. Bowens also has extensive experience working with at-risk populations. She provides Executive Performance Coaching for senior leaders and executive teams, helping them enhance their effectiveness and navigate challenges. As an author of Restoration in the Valley: A Psychological Resource Manual for Clergy, Dr. Bowens contributes valuable insights to the field. Additionally, she serves as a Professor of Psychology at a California university, educating the next generation of mental health professionals.
Dr. Bowens holds multiple certifications demonstrating her expertise and commitment to her field, including Certified Anger Management Specialist (CAMS), Certified Shoplifting and Theft Addiction Specialist (CSTAS), Certified Parent Instructor, and a nationally certified Department of Transportation Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) recognized by NAADAC. Her courses in anger management, shoplifting and theft addiction, and parenting are designed to meet court-mandated requirements, providing both enrollment verification and certificates of completion. Dr. Bowens is committed to empowering individuals to overcome challenges and achieve personal growth. Her dedication to fostering wellness and resilience is evident in her work with both individuals and communities.
Pixie Boyden, MBA is an information technology and community education instructor at Florence Whaley Foundation. Pixie holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix and an Executive Masters of Business Administration from Loyola Marymount University. She is the Management Information Systems Director for USC Rossier School of Education and is a current Adjunct Professor for Pasadena City College and Compton Community College. Pixie has been in the technology field for more than 29 years. Her love for technology pushed her to create Tech Girls E3 Academy which is a STEM camp for middle school girls designed to help young girls engage math and science concepts through project-based experiences with robotics. Pixie is also civically engaged in her community and has served on several nonprofit boards including STEAM:CODERS, Rose Bowl Operating Company, National Women’s Political Caucus-Greater Pasadena Area (NWPC-GPA), Women at Work, NATHA, Latino Heritage Association, ACLU-Pasadena, and served as an appointee to The Women’s Institute for Young Girls advisory board by Senator Holly Mitchell. Pixie is active in local city government by holding membership / participation in various groups throughout the years such as: PUSD Districting Taskforce, City of Pasadena Northwest Commission serving as Chair (2 terms), Taskforce on Good Government, Leadership Pasadena (2005 graduate), NW Primary Center Advisory Committee serving as Chair for the Pasadena Unified School District, and the City of Pasadena Hahamonga Advisory Committee serving as Chair.
Her focus has always been to ensure that her community’s voice is being heard and those who are underrepresented in the community have a seat at the table. Pixie maintains her civic responsibilities through public service in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as well. She is currently serving as the regionally appointed Southern California State Coordinator and the Chair of Technology of the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter. As the proud mother to two adult children and one grandchild, she does all this because she knows her voice matters and works diligently to ensure the next generation knows it too!
Dionne Brooks, LCSW is a mental health clinician at the Florence Whaley Foundation. Dionne has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Louisiana Technical University and a master’s degree in Social Welfare from Louisiana State University. In the last 20 years, she has worked with individuals, couples and families with treatment modalities based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Dionne also specializes in EMDR and trauma informed care.
Dionne is a Navy veteran and has experience treating PTSD, depression, daily stressors, life changes, anxiety, racial trauma, mood disorders and Military Veterans. She has provided services in hospitals, child welfare agencies, Veteran’s Affairs and private practice. Dionne has worked with various clients of different ages, ethnic backgrounds, sexual-orientation, and religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. Dionne is committed to being a support to you and guide you through this journey and empower you to be your best self!
Juan Coca, ACSW is a mental health clinician at the Florence Whaley Foundation. Juan has a bachelor's degree in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. In his 10 years of experience in this profession, he has gained a wealth of knowledge and skills. Whether through textual learning or contextual direct practice in mental health, Juan has provided case management, counseling services, referral sources, psychoeducation, and individual and family therapy in English and Spanish. This diverse experience equips him to handle a wide range of situations and provide the best care for his clients. In the past, Juan has provided services in the medical setting, at a community clinic, and in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a hospital. He has also provided services in the K-12 school setting and have completed the hours required to obtain the Pupil Personnel Service Credential within the state of California.
As a U.S. Army veteran, Juan has assisted fellow Veterans through case management to ensure access to Veteran benefits, including mental health services. Moreover, in recent years, he has provided community-based outpatient mental health services through various programs, ranging from lower-level care to more intensive programs such as Wraparound and Full-Service Partnership. As a mental health clinician, Juan's goal is to embark on a journey with the client, in an atmosphere that is client centered and goal oriented, where self-discovery, improvement, and redefining of self is always a viable option towards the success of the client. William Elliott, AMFT is a mental health clinician and a certified court-ordered parenting and anger management instructor at the Florence Whaley Foundation. William has over 20 years of experience working with individuals and families from various cultures and backgrounds utilizing treatment modalities based on the individual’s needs. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Sociology and furthered his education by acquiring a Master’s degree from Pacific Oaks College in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in working with diverse individuals, families, children and adolescents. William began his career working in residential facilities, where he obtained experience working with adults, children, adolescents and families coping with complex traumas. From there, he supervised for a variety of non-profit agencies providing expertise in the areas connected trauma, anxiety, and depression.
William’s experience includes working with children and adults with mental health disorders, including emotional and/or behavioral. He has facilitated court-mandated programs such as parenting, anger management, and domestic violence classes. His passion for working with youth, adults, and their families is highlighted in his lifelong service to others. William volunteers annually by partnering with local parks working directly with community members by engaging them in activities and providing resources for mental health services. With over two decades devoted to education, Dr. Green stands as a tireless advocate for educational justice and equity. Her journey has been one of unwavering commitment to empowering communities and uplifting the next generation of leaders. She has served in many capacities including: elementary teacher, principal, district coordinator, college professor, and community college board member.
As an educator rooted in urban communities, Dr. Green's philosophy is simple yet profound: every student deserves equitable access to quality education, coupled with unwavering support and high expectations. Her vision transcends the classroom walls, aiming to cultivate lifelong learners and pave the way for generational success. Erin McGlover is an emotional wellness program facilitator at the Florence Whaley Foundation. Erin received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance from The Manhattan School of Music. Erin in also the visionary founder of InnerMatters, an innovative program dedicated to enhancing emotional intelligence (EQ) and fostering creative expression among program participants. With over a decade of experience in volunteer work with organizations such as Girls Inc., Pretty Girls Sweat, and Empowher, and as a volleyball coach at John Muir High School, Erin has observed firsthand the crucial need for foundational emotional intelligence education. Throughout her career, Erin has also amassed 10 years of experience in Human Resources, holding a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification. This background has given her deep insights into the interpersonal dynamics and emotional intelligence skills required in professional settings, further fueling her passion for emotional intelligence education.

Dr. Ruiz is a compassionate and dedicated psychotherapist, life coach, and educator with over two decades of experience serving the greater Los Angeles community. A proud bilingual professional, she has devoted her career to breaking down language barriers and providing culturally sensitive care to Hispanic and immigrant families, particularly those navigating the complexities of low-income environments. Eight 16 Culinary therapy practice is driven by the passion for transforming lives and building healthier, more mindful communities through the fusion of cooking, mindfulness, and holistic healing. He is also the co-founder of Pride Rock Wellness, which is dedicated to fostering mental and emotional well-being in individuals and communities by offering a range of services including individual mental health therapy, couples counseling, child and adolescent therapy, and group therapy. They also provide specialized programs such as anger management, domestic violence intervention, parenting classes, and conflict resolution, IntelliChess and a basketball mentorship program that encourages personal growth and teamwork. Eric is a firm believer that the journey toward individual healing will involve having to travel on unpaved roads that lead to redemption. Pastor John Whaley is an ordained minister and a spiritual counselor at the Florence Whaley Foundation. This foundation was born from a powerful legacy left by his mother and her belief that "everyone deserves the chance to thrive and be whole." Pastor Whaley obtained an Associate of Arts degree in Television Production/Engineering from Pasadena City College and a Bachelor of Arts in Television Production/Engineering from Columbia College. He has a vast spiritual counseling and community service background, with a deep commitment to helping others.
Pastor Whaley has been the Founder and Senior Pastor of Cornerstone Community Church of Los Angeles since 1988. He has served as a Clinical Pastoral Educator at Huntington Memorial Hospital and USC Arcadia Hospital, offering trauma-sensitive spiritual care. Pastor Whaley also volunteered as a Chaplain at USC Arcadia Hospital, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission. His ability to connect with people from various backgrounds enriches his ability to reach marginalized communities who might otherwise feel disconnected. Pastor Whaley served as a mentor for court-ordered at-risk youth with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles Police Department. Pastor Whaley knows the importance of community and how powerful collective healing can be and is honored to serve in this position at The Florence Whaley Foundation, honoring his mother's legacy.
